Week 1

Syllabus review

• We go over what the syllabus and what's expected in the class. Explanation of how 210 differs from 110.
• Review basics of journalism; discuss what's news and news writing
• Class assigned to read "Think like a Writer" and write a short reaction to the chapter.
• Discussion of concept of Think like a Writer.
  

• Discussion of what constitutes meaningful detail
• Reading "Show not tell" in Pity the Poor Reader
• Class assigned to write a scene setter

• We discuss the importance of good story ideas and how to develop them.
• Students are assigned to write first story pitch.
• Assigned to read "The Power of A Good Idea."
• Class critiques each other's pitches.
  

• We discuss what makes a strong profile
• Class assigned to begin writing first draft of profile

• Class critiques and then rewrites first draft of profiles
• Prepares pitch for 2nd story, about an issue off of beat
